The Elements of Home and Family Life that Support a Child’s Montessori Education

Parents, as their children’s first teachers and most ardent supporters, are the determining agents in educating children. We aim, as Catholic Montessori educators, to forge a complementary and collaborative relationship between home, Church and school. The work we do at school is built on the foundation parents lay at home. Children benefit the most when the home and family and the educational method of the school are mutually supportive. In our work with children, we have discovered several elements that are essential to child development and to a beneficial home life and school experience. At Ave Maria Montessori, we commit ourselves to educating and empowering families and staff to understand and provide these elements for their children. These are the elements we count as the most basic needs of childhood:

1. A highly nutritious diet

2. Generous hours of sleep

3. Vigorous outdoor activity

4. Ample time in nature

5. Relaxation and stimulation at home

6. Protection from the passive media, such as television, video, and computers

7. An age-appropriate social life

8. Support for independence and belonging

9. Knowledge of self, self-discipline, training in good manners – what we call “grace and courtesy”

10. Most importantly: Deep and genuine relationships between parents and children
